If buying furniture has ever been a chore, you should visit Mary's Home Furnishings, where you are treated like family. "Our customer service and prices set us apart from our competition. We take great care of our customers," said long-time employee Darrell Beason. "We have a lot of repeat business, including some of our original customers and their children and grandchildren." The furniture store has been in business since 1984, making 2010 the company's silver anniversary.


  
 


 

South Dakota senator speaks at Lincoln Day Dinner

South Dakota Sen., John Thune, was the keynote speaker at Rothchild's for the annual Lincoln Day Dinner on Feb. 27. This year's event was co-chaired by Property Assessor Phil Ballard and Register of Deeds, Sherry Witt, in collaboration with many party members and Ray Jenkins, the current president of the Knox County Republican Party. Thune and his wife, Kimberly, who live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, were delighted to share in the energy of the crowd who was in high spirits after the big win from the UTK Volunteer men's basketball team over rivals, the Kentucky Wildcats.
 
 

 

Election hopefuls race
to meet deadline

As the deadline for candidacy applications for the upcoming election ticked down, there was a mad rush to not only get the forms turned in on time, but also to make sure the necessary 25 valid signatures were in place. Checking for correctness falls to the staff at the Knox County Election Commission and some have been wondering if the same set of standards are used for each candidate or each petition? Supporters of Elaine Davis were devastated when her candidacy was disallowed because some who signed her petition do not live in the district for her commission seat. They are calling, “Foul!” The Knox County Election Commission had not informed each person filing the petition that the new lines for the districts would be used.
  
    
    

 


Tennessee's fallen heroes honored

Tennessee's flag flew at half-mast over the state capitol last week, in recognition of four of the state's fallen heroes who lost their lives in service to their country.

the Coliseum

The Knoxville Civic Coliseum - in partnership with the Knoxville Ice Bears and the Knoxville-Knox County Community Action Committee's AmeriCorps Volunteers - launched an ambitious recycling project at the Coliseum in October of 2009.

Campfield
wins lawsuit
against tenant

After a long court battle, Stacy Campfield has won a judgment against a former tenant, Dillon Carty. Circuit Judge Wheeler Rosenbalm awarded Campfield $4,021.

City offers grants to non-profit organizations

The City of Knoxville is currently accepting applications from non-profit organizations interested in obtaining a city Community Agency Grant for fiscal year 2010-2011, which begins on July 1.


Politicans receive free ride into office

There is nothing better in politics than to run unopposed. Such is the stance for several who are seeking offices in the upcoming 2010 elections. It is as if you could hear one big collective sigh of relief when the date for filing the election petitions passed.
