Here are some good tips to prevent a fire, or death if alternative heating sources are used.
Fireplace:
•Make sure you use a fire screen in front of your fire to keep embers from popping out causing a fire.
•Keep at least a three foot air space in front of your fireplace.
•Burn seasoned wood, don't burn green wood, green wood is more likely to create build up in your chimney that can later cause a chimney fire.
•Make sure your flue works properly so the smoke goes up the chimney like it should.
Power Outage:
•Should the power go out, remember to turn off previously powered items, such as stoves, electric heaters. If the power is
restored and no one is home, you don't want these appliances unattended.
•This will also help to reduce the surge or demand on KUB's system.
Kerosene Heaters:
•Make sure you use the proper fuel for this type of heater.
•When refueling these heaters take them outside.
•Use proper ventilation with these carbon monoxide producing heaters.
•Never bring any heat producing product designed for out door use indoors, such as grills, propane deck heaters. These products produce carbon monoxide, and can kill you.
Emergency Tagging System:
•When a good Samaritan sees a stranded or wrecked vehicle and calls 911 to report it, the operator will ask if there is a visible yellow tag anywhere on the vehicle in question. If so the 911 dispatcher will then know whether or not that vehicle has been checked on already.
This will help reduce the volume of emergency responder calls on the 911 system.
