Below The Fold

An introduction

By Bonny Coker

Before I begin writing about my expertise in the world of beauty, I thought I should introduce myself.

My name is Bonny Chesney Coker, and I’d like to share a little bit about my background and the people who have inspired me along my life journey.

I grew up with 10 siblings. We grew up living in a below average income household.

My father was what I would refer to as a home missionary. He was a deacon in the local church and very interested in politics. I watched him, throughout his life, help many of our neighbors during times of need. He took them to doctor visits and shared food from our two-to-three-acre garden.

After all, he had 10 children. Daddy though he was rich.

My mom always took care of the home and family. She was a perfection, a great cook, could sew and above all, was a true “Southern belle.”

My mom would hold my cosmetology book as I gave her a manicure to make sure I didn’t miss a part of the procedure.

I learned a lot from these two lovely people — to look outside yourself; there are others in need; don’t let your income dictate your outcome; and love is the true riches of life.

Aside from my family, there were teachers who inspired my interest in the beauty industry. My third grade teacher, Alice Craig ... was she ever beautiful! She was tall and had gorgeous blonde hair. She had a beauty mark near her mouth and wore pencil skirts and high heels every day. I wanted to be just like her.

Then, there was Edna Kimble. She was my junior cosmetology teacher. Edna was tall and beautiful with deep-set eyes. Her expressions were priceless. She gave you this look of shock if you were to do something she didn’t approve of, and she sincerely cared about her students. She was a great mentor. She is still a dear friend, and now a client at my salon. She is a beautiful person both inside and out.

I could go on and on ... however, I don’t have access to that much space so we’ll move on to my qualifications.

I took two years of cosmetology classes at Carter High School, and I absolutely loved it. I knew instantly this was my talent, and I couldn’t wait to get shears in my hand.

My hair started out almost to my waist, and after two years of classes, it was similar to Rod Stewart’s. I lost most of my hair but gained a clientele base among my fellow high schoolers. I was happy!

After high school, I attended Barber College and received my license. My first job was in West Knoxville.

My friends and family encouraged me to move back home to the Carter Community. I have owned a salon since 1992 and have mentored many a stylist, some of which own salons themselves.

My staff and I attend classes often, in order to stay up to speed with hair trends and techniques. I truly enjoy learning, growing and encouraging others to do the same.

One of my girls asked, “Why would you give advice or share your opinions with others?”

I truly care about others. My desire is for you to look and feel your best. After all, our outer beauty is a reflection of our
inner beauty.

Mom always said, “Beauty is skin deep!”

I challenge you this week reflect on the people who have inspired you to be the person you are. An attitude of gratitude
is lovely.

Psalms 139:14 shows an appreciation to God for inspiration — “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
