Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation every two minutes a
woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. The American Cancer Society
recommends that women age 40 and older have a screening mammogram and a
clinical breast exam every year. A mammogram can detect breast cancer
up to two years before it is large enough to be felt. Detecting breast
cancer at an early stage greatly improves chances of survival.
The Breast Health Outreach Program at the University of Tennessee
Medical Center’s Cancer Institute provides essential breast
health education and screenings to women throughout a 25-county East
Tennessee region. Funded by the Knoxville Affiliate of the Susan G.
Komen for the Cure and the Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund, the Breast
Health Outreach Program at UT Medical Center has served more than
20,000 women since inception in 1996. For more information about the
program, call (865) 305-9753.
