A Knoxville man is facing attempted murder and other charges in the shooting of a seven-year-old boy at an apartment complex in March.
A Knox County grand jury indicted 20 year-old Roger Edward Hathaway on four felony counts.
The June 2 indictment includes attempted second degree murder, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of employing a firearm during commission of a dangerous felony.
The indictment said Hathaway is the man who shot Jhamis Rice, 7, at Morningside Hills Apartments on Dandridge Ave.
The incident on Mar. 21 attracted statewide attention.
Rice was shot once in the leg while playing football in the courtyard. He was treated at the hospital and released a few hours later.
Police believe the boy was not the intended target.
Neighbors said they heard at least five shots.
Around the same time of the shooting, someone threw a Molotov Cocktail filled with gasoline at a door of an apartment nearby.
Hathaway is also charged with that incident.
Hathaway was officially booked into the Knox County Detention Center on June 18. He’s being held on $100,000 bond.
