Knox club shooter charged

By Scott Brooks

A Knoxville man is charged with attempted murder in the shooting of another man outside an east Knoxville night club.

The incident happened on Feb. 22 at about 5:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Phats Night Club on Asheville Hwy.

According to the affidavit from Knox County court, Carlos Brinson and his girlfriend were inside the club when Brinson got into an argument with 28-year-old Regas Johnson.

Witnesses said Johnson threatened to kill Brinson.

As Brinson and his girlfriend were getting into their car in the parking lot, Johnson allegedly ran up and shot Brinson once in the stomach.

The complaint said Brinson “knows the defendant and looked him in the face when he was shot.”

Witnesses flagged down a police officer.

But at the time, Brinson told police he didn’t know who shot him and wouldn’t cooperate according to KPD spokesman Darrell DeBusk.

Brinson was taken to UT Medical center. He survived the incident and came to police to take out a warrant against Johnson on June 10.

Johnson was arrested on June 20.

Knoxville police charged Johnson with attempted first degree murder, criminal trespassing and evading arrest.

He’s being held in the Knox County Detention Facility on $1 million bond.
