Lady Vols focused
on postseason

By Dave Ford

Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols recently closed out one of the greatest single-season turnarounds in program history, but one wouldn't know it by listening to the 36-year head coach. Fourth-ranked Tennessee (27-2) will enter the 2010 SEC Women's Basketball Tournament (Mar. 4-7 in Duluth, Ga.) in familiar territory as the No. 1 seed. But Summitt said it's no time to relax and think there's nothing left for which to fight. "The season is not over," said Summitt shortly after the Lady Vols defeated Ole Miss on Feb. 28. "We've got the SEC Tournament, then trying to get a No. 1 seed (for the NCAA Tournament)."

Chism still standing tall

By Dave Ford

He came in with four other players filled with hopes and good intentions of building Tennessee into a great basketball program. Before the start of the 2006-07 season, Wayne Chism, Duke Crews, Ramar Smith, Marques Johnson and Josh Tabb appeared to be a promising group of young talent. But four years later, Chism is the last one standing from that class. "It's crazy though, I came in with a lot of people, and through the times I've been here a lot of people have come and gone. And being the one left is kind of disappointing, but I know the guys are out doing something better with their lives," said Chism on Mar. 1 at UT's weekly media luncheon.

Vols shock Kentucky, 74-65

By Dave Ford

Giant killing is quickly becoming a favorite pastime for Bruce Pearl and his band of big-game performers. And on Feb. 27, Tennessee shocked then-second-ranked Kentucky 74-65 in front of 21,214 orange-clad fans at Thompson-Boling Arena. It was the second time in two months the Vols had upset a top-ranked team, the first of which came on Jan. 10 against then-No. 1 Kansas. Afterward, Pearl said he was very proud of his squad. "I felt a lot of emotion visiting with the team after the game. This is a great effort," he said. "This was an important win for our program because Kentucky is such a benchmark in the SEC."
